Well actually in the center the hardwood is even lower than the brick as the floor dips a bit apparently my preference would be to lay the tile so it s level with the hardwood so i wouldn t have a lip at all around the fireplace.

Starting at the front edge of the hearth dry lay a line of tiles in one of the quadrants beginning at the center line and moving out to the edge.
You need to make sure this mortar bed is in the same plane and it s at the right height so the finished tile surface is 3 4 of an inch below the wood floor.
Curved molding allows for a less abrupt transition between the floor and hearth and is easier to keep clean.
